From the Editor—Back to the Future

By Howie Green · pp. 1–4

Building on the Fluorescent Mineral Society’s participation in the 2022 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, this editorial considers how the society can attract and retain new collectors. It recommends outreach through schools, mineral shows, museums, clubs, social media, and accessible educational materials, while emphasizing sound mineral knowledge. The editor also reflects on the society’s scientific and aesthetic visibility and argues that apatite’s appeal and well-studied luminescence make it a promising bridge between fluorescent-mineral enthusiasts and mainstream mineralogy.

The Apatite Supergroup of Minerals

pp. 4–5

Apatite-group chemistry and crystal structure help explain the range and complexity of its luminescent responses. The article outlines substitutions among calcium, lead, and other cations, and among phosphate, arsenate, and other anions, then summarizes the roles of manganese and rare-earth elements as activators or co-activators. It also explains how different crystal sites, excitation wavelengths, and compositional variation affect emission. Fluorescence zoning is presented as both an attractive feature and a record of a crystal’s growth and chemical history.

Whetting Your Apatite

pp. 6–19

A photographic survey showcases fluorescent apatite-group specimens from localities including Shigar Valley and Panasqueira, as well as arsenate apatites from Långban and Jakobsberg. Captions identify associated minerals, illumination conditions, and proposed causes of color and zoning, including manganese and rare-earth activators. The specimens also illustrate identification challenges among arsenate apatite species and the variety of associated minerals, such as calcite, tilasite, pyrite, and pyromorphite. The collection emphasizes the range of appearances under ultraviolet and white light.

Apatite Specimen Photo Submissions

By Howie Green · p. 19

Readers and members of the Fluorescent Mineral Society’s Facebook group are invited to submit photographs of apatite-supergroup specimens for possible publication in future issues. Submissions should include the mineral name, locality, illumination wavelength, ultraviolet and white-light photographs, specimen size, and other relevant information. The editor encourages contributors to provide extended captions that explain the specimens and the stories behind the images.
