Calcite and Hydrozincite - Utah
Contributed by: Mark Cole
Date: Apr 14th, 2026
Locality: Washington County, Utah, USA (See on Mindat)
Size: 5.5 x 3.5 x 6 inches
Weight: 4.17 lb
Description:
Large specimen of hydrozincite and calcite from the Salina Canyon Mine around Beaver Utah. What I find most interesting in this specimen is the calcite color shift to yellow under MW and LW. Another specimen in the database gives the locality as "Hurricane, UT" - I believe they are both the same.
UPDATE: The original 2016 post describes three different locations for this specimen. According to mindat, the Salina Canyon Mine is in Sevier County, Utah. Beaver, Utah is the county seat of Beaver County, Utah. Hurricane, Utah is in Washington County, Utah. The other specimens in this database that are like this specimen are from the Hurricane area, Washington County, Utah. We will make the location of this specimen be Washington County, Utah until better information is available.
