Corundum var. Ruby from 12,000 feet in Nepal!

Contributed by: FMS Admin
Date: May 7th, 2026
Locality: Chumar ruby digs, Ruby Valley, Dhading District, P3 Bagmati Pradesh, Nepal (See on Mindat)
Size: 2.5 inches

Description:
Found this sample of corundum var. ruby from the Chumar Mines, Ganesh Himal, Dhading District, Bagmati Zone, Nepal at a local show, and really liked the response in longwave. I have seen ruby from Africa, from Southeast Asia, but none from Nepal. Very, very bright in longwave, not so much in shortwave or midwave. I've no idea what the blue crystalline material that fluoresces bluish white might be. Interesting piece, even if it only adds a new country to the collection.
