This is the longest exposure of the bracketed source images. It is long enough to capture the deepest shadow detail with minimum noise.
Noise limits the dynamic range of a single camera exposure, and the HDR method overcomes this with fewer exposures and better range than could be accomplished by "stacking" lots of short exposures (as video is used in amateur astrophotography).
