Phosphorographs
Color photos of phosphorescent minerals, taken in darkness with a strobe flash that fires just before the camera shutter opens.
Just as our eyes cause colors to pale in moonlight, weak phosphorescence is often perceived as grayish when the colors may actually be very rich. This is due to our more sensitive scotopic vision rod cells being of only variety and thus monochrome, while our daytime photopic cone cells can sense red, green, and blue.
These images are at the noise limit of a typical DSLR camera, but illumination was from a consumer flash with only about 50 watt-seconds of power. Using multiple 500w studio strobes would provide enough excitation to have more uniform illumination and minimize the noise with shorter exposure times.
The bluish longwave images were taken just for reference during this experiment. They lack proper filtering of the cheap blacklight-blue bulbs, or any cutoff filter over the lens. Next time around, the colors will be more accurate.
