Tentative Agenda for the 31st Annual Meeting of the

Northwest Fluorescent Mineral Society Chapter at the

Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals

This is for all FMS members and guests; you do not have to be an FMS member to attend


Saturday Aug. 23

9:30 AM Arrive and check in.  Admission is normally $8 but we get a special FMS rate of $5.

10:00 Meet in living room. Welcome by Rice NW Museum staff and introduction of everyone attending.

10:30 Programs:

? A showing of a DVD presentation of a talk that Dr. Ted Bornhorst gave at the Tucson FMS Annual meeting last Feb.  The presentation is about the fluorescent display at the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum in Houghton, MI.

? A showing of the Power Point presentation of a talk that was given by Dr. Jeff Post. It is about all the fluorescent diamonds (including the Hope Diamond) that are in the National Gem and Mineral Collection, Smithsonian Institution.  The original presentation was made at the Tucson FMS Annual meeting last Feb.

11:00 Short NW FMS Chapter Business meeting

? A report by Al Liebetrau, president of the international FMS.

? Discussion about who is a NW Chapter member (what defines a member of the NW Chapter)

? Discussions about whether the NW Chapter should have a Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer.

? Nominations and election of NW FMS Chapter President, Secretary/treasurer, or other officers.

? Announcements about next year’s national FMS Annual meeting at the Pacific Northwest Friends of Mineralogy symposium in Oct. 9-11, 2015. 

? Discussion about a field trip this evening or on Sun.

12:00 Lunch. $5 from each person. Lunch will be pizza, soft drinks, vegetable dip plate, and cookies.

12:45  Tour of the Rice Museum

1:45  Trading, selling, your fluorescent specimens in the special dark room.

3:30  Show N’ Tell of one or two of your favorite specimens.  Orange fluorescents will be featured, but you can bring any fluorescent specimen you want to show.

4:00 Auction of specimens including Horn Silver Mine sphalerite.  Part of the proceeds will go to the FMS

4:30 Door prize drawing.  Free fluorescent specimens and a UV light assembly.  It would be nice if you would bring one or two specimens to donate for the drawing.  (The person coming the farthest gets the first draw).

5:00 Rice Museum closes, we can then drive to a restaurant for dinner.

Sunday Aug. 24 (optional)

10:00 AM We will meet in the special dark room at the Rice Museum for more trading.  Also there will an opportunity to have your SW filters measured to determine the degree of UV solarization.  Other activates are planned such as measuring the spectral distribution of fluorescent minerals, identifying unknown fluorescent minerals, and just talking about minerals.
